What Do Elevated White Blood Cells Count When On Pain Medication Indicate?
I had micro back surgery 5 weeks ago, i was taking narcotic pain meds for 3 months for a bad knee and the back. 3 weeks ago I slowly titrated my self off of oxycodone 5mg. I was taking 2 tablets every 3 hrs. I have been off all pain meds for 11 days but feel lousy. About noon time it feels like I m running a fever but when I take my temp its a little elevated from my normal which is 97.5. It may run 98.5. I had blood work done and it showed my white count a little elevated. It makes me feel anxious and out of sorts. I m not sure what to do. Thanks Steve s

General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
Elevated white blood cell count while on pain medication can indicate an infection or an inflammatory response in the body. The high white blood cell count may result from a transient reaction to the surgical procedure or pain medications.
However, it's essential to follow up with your healthcare provider to figure out the underlying cause and get the right treatment. It's also possible that feeling lousy after stopping pain medication is a common withdrawal symptom, and you should talk to your doctor about managing the symptoms.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
