What Do Enlarged Liver And Spleen In A 52-year-old Man Indicate?
hi sir i m vikash.my father is52 yrs old. he was drinking alcohal and he have a problem of indigestion constipation. he was meeted to the phscisian specialist gastroentrologist. doctor advised for test like lft, aust. antigen, ultrasound.lft is normal but size of liver is enlarged it is in 171mm and spleen size is also enlarged it is in 135mm. aust. antigen report is negative. tell me about the condition of my father?
He may be having an enlarged liver due to history of alcohol consumption which initially causes fatty liver . The enlarged spleen is probably due to portal hypertension which again is secondary to alcoholic liver disease. It would be advisable for him to undergo an endoscopic exam to look for esophageal varices which may occur due to portal hypertension and have a predisposition to cause bleeding in the stomach if left untreated. However the most important thing is to quit alcohol completely. His prognosis would significantly improve if he does so.
