What Do Ferritin Level Of 12 And Low T4 Level In A Teenager Suggest?

My 14 yr old daughter has a ferritin level of 12 but her Rbc count is normal and her hgb, hct, mch, mcv are slightly elevated. She takes 30 mg ferrous fulmar ate daily and eats foods with iron. She never had an iron count or TIBC. Also her tsh is in normal range but her total t4 is a little low. Does any of this mean anything?

Hi

Ferritin levels can range from 12 to 150 ng/mL for females. The above mentioned level is in the lowest range of normal values. This means that iron deficiency can occur later in case dietary and oral iron is not taken.

Early stages of hypothyroidism can present with normal tsh and slightly reduced t3, t4 levels.Thyroid autoantibodies can be checked.Monitor Iron and thyroid levels monthly to detect any abnormalities.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
