What Do Hiccups During Sleep In A Child Indicate?

My granddaughter just returned from ER visit with dislocated elbow(3rd time it has happened). She screamed and cried during entire time (2 hrs) while they checked her out, X-rays and then popped it back . They gave her some codine pain Rx while there. She was in no pain when she got home and is asleep but making a hiccup noise while sleeping. Should we be alarmed that it is something with codine. I tried waking her up and she is sleepy and groggy but they stopped for a bit but now doing it again

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The hiccup noise will stop on its own, it is not a known side effect of codeine but everyone reacts differently to medication.

It is likely related to the prolonged and understandable crying during the time in the ER.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
