What Do Itching And Redness After Using Metronidazole Vaginal Gel Suggest?

Hi. I m a 20-year-old young lady and I have been on the Metronidazole Vaginal gel for 5 days. Last night was my last one, which means that I finished the treatment. I followed all of my nurse s instructions and made sure to use the medication as indicated. Yet, I haven t had any relief. I still have a lot discharge. I itch a lot, inside and out which causes redness. I was on a different treatment before (the pills) and this didn t work either. I don t know what to do at this point. It s so bad I think I might miss class tomorrow...

Hi,

The commonest causes of itching, discharge, redness can be due to one of the following reasons:
- Allergic reaction to Metronidazole. This is not uncommon. Anyway the course is completed hence stop applying the gel locally.
- Fungal infection. You can get lab tests done. Consult your gynecologist for examination, add on anti-fungal oral and local medications once the Doctor confirms so.
- Symptomatic treatment for itching with antihistamine.
Povidone iodine is preferable as it helps to control secondary infection.
- Abstain from any sexual activities.
Aeration of the local area, cleaning with plain water 2 to 3 times in a day is needed for local health of skin.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Anesthesiologist Dr. Pallavi.m's  Response
Hello,

You seem to be suffering from vaginitis. As metronidazole didn't help reduce symptoms, yours might be a yeast infection of vagina also called vaginal candidiasis. The following are treatment options:
1) Yeast infections usually are treated with an over-the-counter antifungal cream or suppository, such as miconazole (Monistat 1), clotrimazole (Lotrimin AF, Mycelex, Trivagizole 3), butoconazole (Gynazole-1) or tioconazole (Vagistat-1)
2) You need to rule out any irritation caused by laundry detergent, tampoon or new soap
3) If your vaginitis doesn't subside, oral fluconazole (diflucan)may be necessary
Tab. Diflucan 150 mg orally single dose would clear the vaginal candidiasis. If you don't get relief, please consult a gynecologist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
