Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Do Itchy Rashes On The Body While On Nitrofurantoin Indicate?
i have been taking nitrofurantoin macro 100mg capsules for a UTI for the past 10 days with 4 more days to go. I was taking 2 per day for 7 days and taking 1 per day for 7 days. I have some red itchy places on my arms, back and legs. Some of these spots were brown sun damage spots from years ago but 3 days ago they turned red and got very itchy. I have used cortisone on the spots but they are not clearing up. Could this medicine be causing this and should I stop taking this med? Dianne

General & Family Physician, Dr. Varinder's Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes it is the drug effect. As only 4 days have left out of 14-day schedule do not stop it now. You should take tablet Levocetirizine two times daily for rash.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr Varinder Joshi
