Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have small irritated patches (rough in texture), on the areolas of my breasts. The nipples are not affected. They are not painful but they are very itchy. When lotion is applied it is better but it does not go away. Do you know what this condition may be? If only a skin irritation, can it be treated with an over-the-counter medication?
Hello and welcome to HCM. It seems like local dermatitis or eczema affecting your breasts. I recommend if I was your treating doctor -local application of hydrocortisone containing ointment 4-5 days (to be taken under physician's prescription) -oral anti allergic medications like avil once or twice for 3 days. -avoid wearing synthetic inner wear. -keep the skin moisturized by using vaseline. Still if the symptoms persist, going for local immonumodulators medication like tacrolimus.Besides, doing some tests like mammography,USG will be necessary depending on your age and presence of other risk factors. This is to rule out a rare cancer called Paget's disease with similar clinical symptoms. Hope this helps. Thanks and regards.
