Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, my question is about MRSA testing and lab results. My brother lives in a nursing home. He s been in the hospital 29 days. He had aspiration Pneumonia- he s fed thru a gastric tube as he can t swallow. Because the nurses aides lay him down for his feedings, we strongly suspect this might have caused his Pneumonia. That said, he was being treated, got worse and was then diagnosed with MRSA Pneumonia by way of sputum culture. Luckily, he s better and the hospital wants to discharge him back to the nursing home. However, they say the culture test results aren t good enough to accept him back. What is the rating system for MRSA culture lab results? The infectious diseases doctor says its colonized and he no longer requires isolation. What test result am I looking for?
Sputum culture sensitivity has low specificity in diagnosing pneumonia as there is chance of contamination from oral cavity and pharynx. It is the blood culture that is the best test that can help to ascertain the cause, but less sensitive and can came as false negative.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
