Good morning!
Isn't it aggravating when the doctor runs tests and then doesn't discuss them with you? I will do my best to interpret your lab values,but you realize labs are interpreted in the light of the entire presenting clinical picture and I have no idea of his medical history, just the labs.
I will only address the labs that are out of range or labs that are out of range that relate to ones that are in range. ALT at 79 is indicative of liver
injury (most probably
jaundice in the case of
typhoid);
globulin, watch;
cholesterol is elevated, re-check after liver heals; triglycerides are only mildly elevated;LDL cholesterol is very high, which is of concern in light of his cholesterol; The referance range means that there is not enough HDL to carry the cholesterol out of the body and the high LDL is dumping the cholesterol at the arterial walls to form plaque; the LDL/HDL ratio, same thing, not enough HDL to compensate for the LDL. So, this situation could get complicated with his diet.
I would highly recommend consulting a Dietitian for a low
fat diet, absolutely no fiber until the typhoid has cleared, diet should be light and easily digestable to avoid deficiencies, the use of soups (defatted), lots of fluids.The basic diet is high calorie, high protein. With the elevated lipids I am adding low fat until lipids,
bilirubin and ALT normalize.
I can give you further information on diet through my specialist portal. Just write in and ask for me specifically. I have been working with typhoid patients for the past year. Good luck and here's to a speedy recovery for your husband (expect complaints of
nausea, try some ginger tea) Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
