What Do My Lab Test Results Indicate?

Last week I went for my physical and had the following results: Red Blood Cell count: 90 (supposed to be around 140) White Blood cells count: 20% lower than normal Creatine level: 130 Ml/min which is high Trace of blood in urine. Cholesterol: 1.8 which is very low. Over the last 5 years I have been 3.5. Iron and B12 levels normal. My doctor found the results a bit strange (especially the low chol,) I am going for a ultrasound of my kidneys on Tuesday. I am a healthy 62 male with normal blood pressure and in good physical health. (5 10 ; 180lbs) WHat are your thoughts? Am I in trouble? Thanks for your response. Rick

Hi,

Your blood reports suggest an elevated creatinine levels and blood in urine that indicate kidney dysfunction. Lower level of cholesterol might be an indication of underlying kidney disease. The following may be few important causes:
1) Chronic kidney disease due to diabetes mellitus
2) Acute kidney injury due to various drugs and toxins.
3) Dehydration causing kidney failure
4) Various other causes like IgA nephropathy, any connective tissue disorder like lupus
5) Hypertension causing chronic kidney failure
6) Nephropathy due to various causes
7) Prostatic hyperplasia causing urethral obstruction and hydronephrosis

The following are suggested to patients who come to my clinic with similar complaints:
1) Ultrasound abdomen and pelvis
2) Complete urine analysis
3) Urine culture
4) Kidney function tests including serum creatinine, blood urea and blood urea nitrogen.

Certainly there is some alteration in normal kidney function but no need to panic as you are healthy otherwise and many kidney dysfunction causes are easily treatable and reversible. Kindly undergo the above mentioned tests and be in good spirits. Nothing to panic as there are so many patients with kidney failure but leading normal life with medications.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
