What Do Nighttime Leg Cramps Indicate?

Every night for the last 3 days while sitting in bed watching TV, I get horrible cramping the back of my right leg. It starts just above the knee and will shoot downward to my ankle. I can massage it and it helps alittle but continues for a couple of hours. Always starts at night
