What Do Numbness And Pain Around A Surgical Incision Indicate?

I had surgery on my thigh almost three weeks ago to remove a malignant melanoma and still experiencing severe numbness and pain on right side of incision across thigh. Stitches are still in because dr was out of town this past week. Wondering if I could be allergic to stitches or have an infection inside where tissue was taken out. My skin is very sensitive because it got red and irritated all around where the tape was when I put a bandage over incision. Taking ES Tylenol 1000 does not help the pain. A friend suggested I take Gabapentin to help with the nerve pain. Wondering if that s ok... thanks!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

* As per my clinical experience, there is pain with redness at operated site which indicates possible infection or inflammation giving secondary pain around the incision.
* Gabapentin is not going to work as effectively in this issue as primary management of the cause is a major concern rather than other molecules.
* I recommend to fix an appointment with your surgeon on a priority basis.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
