What Do Numbness And Tingling Sensation On The Tongue Indicate?
I am female, age 51, smoker, and peri menopausal. Recently my tongue and throat hurt when I smoked. Then there were a few days when I felt like I burnt my tongue while eating. I stopped smoking for a few days and the hurt went away but has been replaced by a numbness and tingling in my tongue and lips as well as a metallic taste. I had a cigarette today and found heightened sensitivity of my tongue. Is this cause for concern?
It looks like your tongue is inflamed and the symptoms of numbness, tingling and burnt feeling seems to be due to a condition known as Burning Mouth Syndrome.. It can occur due to a number of causes like nutritional deficiency of iron and vitamin B12, dry mouth or xerostomia, stress, acid reflux, side effects of medicines etc.. I would suggest you to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical examination and investigations like blood tests can be advised.. For now start taking Vitamin B complex and zinc supplements.. Chew sugar free chewing gum that is mint flavoured to reduce the metallic taste.. Avoid high aroma foods like onion, garlic etc as they can worsen the taste..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
