What Do Pain And Swelling In The Left Ear Indicate?

I am a 55 year old male. For a couple of months I have had pain and swelling either in my left ear or right below it. I can’t quite pinpoint the exact area of pain. It causes some pain down into my jaw area as well. I have had a couple of bouts of vertigo and some dizziness. The pain has been pretty constant for two months now. I have taken ibuprofen and acetaminophen to reduce the pain. It has affected my sleep and my heart rate and blood pressure have been elevated. Taking ear drops reduces the pain also. I saw my primary care doctor when it first started but he didn’t notice any swelling but maybe a little fluid in my ear. He gave me some meclizine for the vertigo. If I sleep on my right side the vertigo tends to stay away. I don’t know if I should go see an ear nose and throat specialist because the swelling is constant.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It seems like internal ear infection. You take Cefadroxil and Clavulanic Acid twice a day for 5 days. Use Moxifloxacin ear drops thrice a day for 5 days.

Consult your physician for prescription. If still you do not get relief then consult ENT surgeon. Don't worry. It seems to be alright.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel
