What Do Pain And Swelling In The Left Knee Indicate?

Out of the blue today, the inside of my left knee starting hurting and it is swollen. I do not remember injuring it in any way. The pain is like a 3-4 on a scale of 1-10. I am very active with running, spinning classes and different machines at the gym. I have no idea what could be causing the pain. I tried slowly running on it and it does not hurt to do that. I did a few machines at the gym and it did not hurt then either. It just hurts in general when I am walking around. I am a 53 yo female.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

If there is no history of trauma, it's most probably the result of muscle strain or tear. You need to give your joint enough rest, avoid vigorous activities, apply cold compressors, take topical anti-inflammatory drugs and take over the counter analgesics when necessary. In case you develop severe pain or swelling, it's important to go to the nearest medical center for evaluation.

I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you have any further questions.
