What Do Pain And Swelling In The Upper Arm Indicate?

I recently had the pneumovax 23 injection. By afternoon following injection my upper arm had swollen by 50% and was sore/burning/tender. I tried to take an afternoon nap to forget the constant pain only to awaken to massive chills and sweating. This carried on thru the night (3 episodes of freezing chills & sweats). By day two I developed flu-like symptoms and massive hives (walnut sized) all over trunk and legs. It has taken 5 full days to recover and sequellae to subside. This certainly cannot be the typical reaction to the vaccine otherwise no one would get it. I am 70 yrs old and in perfect health... no Rx drugs. Any thoughts ?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The pain, swelling and skin eruptions indicate drug sensitivity or reaction to particular vaccine components (though not a typical reaction).

Hope this information will clear your doubt.
