What Do Pain And Tingling Sensation In The Upper Thigh Be Treated?

I have recently started experiencing needle like pain in my upper left thigh. It is tender to the touch. Sometimes the same needle like tingling continues up into my hip and lower back. I am a runner and have been running for over 10 years. I average 20 - 25 miles a week. I have stopped running for about a week since I started feeling this sensation.

hi sir/mam,your pain seems to be due to nerve compression or entrapment.the following are probable causes:

1)meralgia paraesthetica : it is due to compression of lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh.presents as tingling, numbness, pain in the anterolateral part of thigh.causes are obesity, diabetes mellitis, tight waist belts, excessive and abnormal stretching, trauma, etc.most important is it doesnt have any motor symptoms I.e; the muscular strength of thigh would be absolutely fine.treatment is a nerve block that is ultrasound guided at the inguinalligament using a local anaesthetic and a corticosteroid would relieve pain for many weeks.usually it is a self limiting condition and goes off when the cause is eliminated.

2)sciatic nerve compression: it occurs mainly due to lumbar inter vertebral disc pathology(either slipped disc or degenerative disc disease.).pain is felt in buttock down along back of thigh and sometimes even in the front inguinal region.it can have even motor component I.e; weakness of limb.treatment includes rest with pain relief medication : pregabalin 75mg once daily before sleep at night.physiotherapy is also recommended.

these do not require any great diagnostic evaluation but only clinical examination is enough to arrive at a specific diagnosis.so,an ortho consultation would help you.please don’t worry as the pain takes some time to go off and you can have recurrences too.but with avoidance of provocative factors and regular exercises which are prescribed by your physical therapist would prevent recurrence of pain.hope my explanation clarifies your doubts.any other health issues, please let me know.its my pleasure to serve you.thank you.take care.wish you and your family a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year.bye.
