What Do Painful Blisters On The Legs And Ankles Indicate?

I have several areas on my leg, ankle, shin that are extremely red, painful blisters that ooze yellowish fluid, sometimes chills, fever never higher than 100.4, night sweats. Blood work, biopsies, culture tests for fungus, bacteria, viral all have come back negative. This started in August, thought at first cellulitis, but antibiotics did not help. My body seems to be healing itself, most areas are drying up and my energy and appetite are back. Lost 15 pounds. My fear is that since we cannot identify it , it will come back again.

General Surgeon 's  Response

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

This is probably a consequence of venous insufficiency. It means that your veins are dilated and there is blood stasis after long sitting or standing. This is not as serious issue and to confirm my diagnosis you need to do ultrasound. In mild cases it can be treated with elastic stockings, avoiding prolonged sitting or standing, weight regulation and detralex ointment. In severe cases surgery may be required as a permanent solution. It is also advisable to reduce salt in your diet, keep legs elevated while sleeping and regulate blood pressure. Other causes such as kidneys and heart disorders are less common and should be considered only if venous insufficiency is ruled out by Doppler ultrasound or venography.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
