What Do Predominance Of Parabasal Cells Shown In Pap Smear Mean?

Hi Dr., can I just Sir about the result of my mother s laboratory result? About her pap smear the result is: Predominance of parabasal cells. Numerous endocervical cells in background. And her CA 125 is: 120.09 u/ml. I m hoping for an answer Sir, Thank you and JAHBLESS/GODBLESS

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Based on the findings you have shared about your Mother's report, following things can be concluded:
1. CA 125 levels is increased as normal levels should be less than 35 U/mL. She might have a benign condition, or the test result could mean that there is a possibility of having ovarian, endometrial, peritoneal or fallopian tube cancer.
2. Parabasal cells in pap smear are often seen in patients who lack estrogen.
3. Endocervical cells needs to be normally present in PAP smear.
Hence, it is better that she needs to have a regular follow-up and might need estrogen replacement therapy.
Kindly consult Gynecologist in this regard for appropriate management.
