What Do Pus Cells In The Urine After Gallbladder Removal Indicate?

Hi my mother is 49 years old and has had all four C sections. She s now 77 y/o. The dr says she s suffering from rheomitoid arthritis. Two years ago she got her gal bladder removed. Her urine tests shows abnormality which concerns me. Her Ph level is 6.0 which seems fine. But pus cells are 1-2 and epithelial cells are 10-12. Kindly tell me if this seems ok? Or if I need to get serious about her condition.

Hi,

Pus and epithelial cells in urine sample is usually not related to gall bladder removal surgery done 2 years ago nor is it related to rheumatoid arthritis.

Good to hear that the urine pH level is normal. 0-5 pus cells/hpf (high power field) in a urine sample is considered normal. However, more than 6 epithelial cells/hpf in urine sample may indicate a urinary tract infection (UTI).

If urine symptoms such as burning sensation while passing urine, urge to urinate, increased frequency of urination, etc. are absent, the possible cause can be mild UTI.

Drinking plenty of water of at least 2-3 liters a day, cranberry juice (that may help in flushing bacteria out of the urinary tract), taking over the counter urine alkalizer, avoiding douching and scented products in genital area, avoiding spicy food, caffeinated and aerated drinks, alcohol, smoking, etc. may be a good idea.

If a similar patient comes to my clinic, I would order a urine culture after a physical examination for further evaluation and prescribe antibiotic medications, based on the test reports and symptoms.

Consulting the treating doctor and discussing the same may be a good idea.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
