What Do Pus Filled Bumps On The Knee Of A Child Indicate?

My 4 year old granddaughter has a bump with a pus filled head on it on her knee. We are not sure if it was a bite of some type or what it is. She has had it since Thursday. It is now swelling, bruising, and causing her much pain. Not sure what to do about it. Waited 4 hours in the emergency room because was that concerned about it. However they said it would be another 2 hour wait. Took child home. She was unmanageable. Do you think this needs to be seen by an ER?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The lesion would be painful because of the infection itself and also because of the stress or pressure in the lesion due to the pus present. When the pus discharges, the pain level would decrease significantly. Treatment generally consists of:

(1) Incision and drainage of the lesion, this is a short procedure, in office and it is to let it drain. It may burst on its own however.

(2) Pain management with an NSAID, that is children's Advil or Cataflam.

(3) Cleaning the area with an antiseptic twice daily.

(4) Applying a topical antibiotic. If this is not enough, her doctor may prescribe an oral antibiotic instead. She should be taken to see someone for assessment.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
