What Do Severe Swelling And Pain In The Lower Leg Indicate?

I have been having severe swelling of lower leg, calf, ankle and top of foot. Both left and right. But right is more affected and painful. This is very painful, cannot walk with ease. Hurts to touch area. Saw my PCP this week. With X-ray rules out and fractures to ankle and or foot. With ultrasound ruled out DVT. Have had these symptoms for 10 days. I am 51 year old female. I take levothyroxine daily (I have taken this since I was 16 yrs old). I take multivitamin a few times a week and vitamin C, vitamin D3 and B12 everyday.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

This may be a beginning of leg cellulitis which is inflammation of subcutaneous tissues and may develop into diabetic foot or even diabetic gangrene so any swelling, redness or pain in legs in someone who has diabetes should be evaluated by medical professionals since antibiotics may have to be started as soon as possible to prevent spreading of infection. He should do at least basic blood tests and blood sugar to see if there is significant infection or not. Other causes include deep vein thrombosis or lymph edema and these should be checked with an ultrasound exam.
