What Do Swelling And Inflammation On The Lower Back Indicate?

My husband has a large hard swelling on his lower left back. It is very inflamed in surrounding area. Several inches of bright red. The lump is apparently full of pus but too deep and too hard to drain Very painful. The DR said he has cellulitis. He is taking Bactrim. DR said if pain gets worse or if redness spreads to go to the ER. How serious can this get?
