Hi there,
There are two parts to the blood counts that you have included in your question, and the one that is related to his
fever is the WBC, which is the white cell count. The high total and
neutrophil count suggests that he has a bacterial infection, which will respond to an antibiotic. The suggestion of which type of antibiotic would depend on the source of the fever, but usually something like
amoxicillin would be a safe bet.
What other symptoms does he have? Is there a
cold or cough? Is there
vomiting, or does he seem to be uncomfortable when passing urine? Since he is still young, if we are unsure, I would run a urine test to make sure that he does not have a urine infection.
The other part is the RBC, which is not quite useful in his current problem, but I would like to note that his red blood cells do not appear to be completely normal. This could be due to something like thalassaemia-trait, if it is in the family, or
iron deficiency, if he has poor feeding and weight gain or has other chronic health problems. A look at the Hb, or
haemoglobin levels, would be useful to see if he needs to be investigated further (average would be 10-13 g/dL, look at the lab's own reference range).
Hope this helps, please let me know if you have further questions.
Regards,
Dr. Teh
