What Do The Following Colonoscopy Report Indicate?
Hi, my fiancé is 53 years old, and has just had his first colonoscopy. However he doesn t recall what the doctor, nurse, etc had told him afterward he was still a little out of it. I am reading thru the paperwork that they provided but have no clue what exactly i am reading? Please help me to understand at top of page states discharge instructions for colonoscopy which I understand that part makes sense to me. Its toward the bottom of the page that says impressions: polyp of colon (sigmoid), rectal polyp, mild diverticulosis of colon, internal hemorrhoids, external hemorrhoid, normal appearing lleum. With this said is all ok? What does these things mean?
Polyps are clumps of cells outgrowing from internal tissue. Some of the polyps may be cancerous in the beginning where as some may turn into cancer in coming years, may be in 10 years or so. However, most of polyps particularly colon polyps are benign and not cancerous. Diverticulum is outpouching of the lining or wall of the gut to make a pouch. Most of the mild diverticula don't cause any symptom and resolve themselves in time to come. However, 30% of all cases of diverticulosis may cause infection turning into diverticulitis & will eventually need course / courses of antibiotics.
5-15% of diverticula will result into symptoms of bleeding and may require surgical treatment. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins. These may be present in rectum and anus. Internal hemorrhoids are usually painless, but some times may give rise to bleeding. However, external piles may be painful and may bleed particularly during the straining of stools. Many hemorrhoids can be treated by changing the life style and other home remedies. Taking high fiber diet, local anti- hemorrhoidal creams, warm water soaks and oral pain reliever may be of help. However, some of the hemorrhoids, particularly big ones will need surgery for the treatment.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
