I am interested in knowing if these findings will require a FNA or Biopsy. PROCEDURE: Ultrasound of the thyroid CLINICAL HISTORY: Thyroiditis COMPARISON: No prior TECHNIQUE: Multiple sonographic images of the thyroid were obtained FINDINGS: The right lobe is 5.1 x 2.2 x 1.6 cm with no focal finding although the echogenicity is heterogeneous throughout. The left lobe is 5.0 x 1.9 x 1.8 cm. There are 3 small cystic nodules within the left lobe measuring 3 mm, 5 mm and 3 mm maximum diameter. The echogenicity is heterogeneous throughout with no additional finding in the left lobe. The thyroid isthmus is thickened measuring up to 7 mm in thickness and contains 2 separate small cystic nodules each measuring 2 mm maximum diameter. The echogenicity of the thyroid isthmus is heterogeneous throughout.IMPRESSION: There is heterogeneous echogenicity of the thyroid throughout with mild enlargement of both the right lobe and the left lobe and prominent thickening of the thyroid isthmus. There are 3 small cystic nodules in the left lobe and 2 small cystic nodules in the thyroid isthmus.
Heterogeneous echotexture of thyroid is generally a non specific finding and it may be due to many causes like hashimoto's thyroiditis, grave's disease etc. Small cystic nodules may be degenerative changes in nodules, colloid cysts etc. You may need clinical correlation and few more investigations. You may need thyroid profile assay and FNAC. FNAC/Biopsy is very helpful in disease assessment. Treatment depend upon findings.
