Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Do These Cholesterol, Triglyceride And HDL Levels Indicate?
I just had simple cholesterol test Monday. I do exercise hard workouts. Age 70 M wt 158 ht 5 7 1/2 Triglycerides = 88, HDL = 58, LDL = 122 90 days ago...Tri = 127, HDL = 53, LDL = 112 My NP suggested taking generic Lipitor for the next 5 years. I do know the med is hard on the liver. Should I be concerned. A recent calcium heart test showed some accumulation of heart plaque. Your take/suggestion?
Your LDL (bad cholesterol) is in the near-normal level (norm is under 100 but up to 129 is near normal, 130 and over is mildly elevated). Treatment with lipid-lowering drugs is not necessary unless you have diabetes or increased risk for cardiovascular disease.
Thus, to decide the need for treatment, more information is needed, other than just your LDL level. Depending on your age, chronic conditions and also on your risk for cardiovascular disease, the need for the treatment can be decided. You will need to discuss these with your doctor to better evaluate your need for Lipitor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
