I had both a thyroid ultrasound and biopsy. Results are below. Anything I should be concerned about? What do you think endocrinologist will recommend? Examination: Thyroid ultrasound The right lobe of the thyroid is enlarged, with a prominent nodule. The right lobe measures 66 x 24 x 25 mm in the left lobe 54 x 23 x 23 mm. There is a heterogeneous isoechoic ovoid mass in the right lower pole measuring 42 x 24 x 42 mm. This contains moderate blood flow. There are no calcifications. Impression: 1. Heterogeneous vascular mass in the lower pole of the right lobe of the thyroid measures 42 x 24 x 42 mm. Ultrasound-guided biopsy is recommended. Large thyroid right nodule SPECIMEN DESCRIPTION Received are two slides, from which two Papanicolaou-stained smears are prepared. Additionally material is received in CytoRich red medium, from which one Papanicolaou-stained SurePath slide is prepared. MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION The slides contain many fragments of thyroid follicular cells, predominantly in two-dimension flat fragments or macro-follicles, some with entrapped colloid. Small clusters of follicular cells with Hrthle cell change are noted. No cytologically malignant cells are seen to suggest papillary, medullary, or anaplastic carcinoma. If representative of the lesion, a benign process is favored.
