What Do Tingling Sensation And Pain In The Hands And Fingers Indicate?

My left hand, fingers and arm have a tingle sensation to the point where my arm was very painful. It woke me up from my sleep, I could get some relief by letting my arm hang down towards the ground. Almost like letting the blood flow downward. But then the tingle returns when I lift my arm back up.Ive been try to rub my fingers, hsnd and arm to maybe increase circulation. Any ideas what is wrong? Thank you.

Hello,

Coming to your presentation of pain and tingling sensation, there are many causes of such symptoms which occur in long term diseases (diabetes, nerve degeneration etc). But after carefully seeing your presentation, the most probable cause in my opinion might be Carpel tunnel syndrome.

Carpel tunnel syndrome occurs when a major nerves to the hand (median nerve) is compressed as it travels through the wrist. This can be caused in different situations:
1. women and older people are more likely to develop
2. Heredity
3. Repetitive hand use (Repeating the same hand and wrist motions)
4. Hand and wrist position (Doing activities that involve extreme flexion or extension of the hand and wrist for a prolonged period of time)

The carpel tunnel syndrome can be confirmed by:
1. Nerve conduction studies
2. Electromyogram (EMG)
3. MRI

Coming to treatment part you can follow the below:
1. Bracing or splinting - Wearing a brace or splint at night will keep you from bending your wrist while you sleep which reduces pressure on the nerve.
2. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)- ibuprofen and naproxen can help relieve pain and inflammation.
3. Activity changes -reduce activities in which wrist is flexed or extended.
4. Steroid injection may relieve some symptoms.
5. Nerve gliding exercises.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vamsi Krishna Chittimoju
