Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter is almost 26. Two weeks ago she her right hand/arm developed a resting tremor which came out of nowhere. Went to ER Ct scan and CBC and urine test were clear. Saw neuro the next day had a MRI with and without contrast also clear. Tomorrow she will have an EGG and an MRI of the cervical spine no contrast. What I want to know is there any possibility that this is something other than PARKINSONS?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Resting tremor is tremor when the patient is resting and improves when the patient is trying to reach a target or use the extremity that has tremor. This may happen with Parkinson but Parkinson is not so usual in her age and the doctor would have found other symptoms like rigidity in examination, increased reflexes, and slow movements with reduces arm span movements. Parkinson is thought as the diagnosis if the other possible diagnosis are ruled out. The doctors have to rule out Multiple Sclerosis which is not a very common condition but can affect movements and having an MRI of the spine for this is important. Cerebellum is another cause but because head MRI is normal than very likely this is not the case with your daughter. Drugs can be a reason for tremors as well. If a patient takes drugs for certain symptoms (metoclopramide) or illicit drugs or excess caffeine tremor can happen. Thyroid function and electrolytes have to be checked as well as sometimes hyperthyroidism might cause tremor and certain electrolytes may affect muscles.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Antoneta Zotaj
