What Do Weakness And Pain In The Upper Arm Indicate?

I have weakness and pain in my upper arm and most uncomfortable to sleep on my side. I have been taking care of my grandson since he was 3mos. Old. He is now 2 yrs. old weighs 31 lbs. I can dry my hair without discomfort but I have pain and weakness if I reach behind at waist level. I feel like it’s a pulled muscle from overuse but this has been going on for at least a month and I am wondering if Ihave a more serious issue. Taking Tylenol arthritis which helps.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is understandable to be concerned re the persisting pain.

As you stated, it is likely a muscle issue but you should consider imaging of the shoulder to make sure that this is the case.

If you can, you can try anti inflammatory pain medication to see if one of these may help, e.g. Naproxen, Ibuprofen, etc.

I hope this helps.
