What Do White Spots On The Edges Of The Lips Indicate?
My brother had white spots on the edges of his upper and lower lips. It is multiplying and is now looking like a white patch. We consulted two dermatologist, one said its fordyce spot and the other its vitiligo. What’s the difference? How can we tell if it is fordyce of vitiligo? Thanks :)
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
You have symptoms of white spots on the edges of the lips which could be due to viral infection leading to herpes. Yes, it could be Fordyce spots.
Need not to worry. Fordyce spots are usually white yellowish spots and are harmless. However, Vitiligo is depigmentation of skin and leading to white patches formation.
I would suggest you take preventive measures such as avoiding exposure to sunlight. Maintain complete hygiene. Avoid itching area. Visit dermatologist once and start treatment after a thorough examination. Cover face whenever go outside. Drink plenty of fluids.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
