What Do You Suggest For A Pregnant Woman Who Was Placed On Methadone Drug While At Rehab,detoxing From Heroin?

Are there any Drs In the Phila area that will detox a woman from methadone while pregnant? My daughter is pregnant and was placed on this drug while at rehab,detoxing from heroin. She does not want to stay on methadone but they would not help her if she didn't take the drug. Now, she is stuck on this drug because of the baby.

Hello, I would be happy to help you with your question.

She is absolutely stuck on this drug during the pregnancy. In fact, it is preferred to her being off and back to using heroin! Also, if she were to try and wean and precipitate a withdrawal episode, this carries significant risk to the fetus. So, she needs to stay on this medication during the pregnancy and there are plenty of OB/GYN's that have experience with this management during pregnancy - I would start by simply calling around. Also, there needs to be close coordination with a Pediatrician who is also familiar with weaning the newborn off of this drug appropriately.
