What Does this MRI Test Result Mean?
I had an MRI done and the results shows that there is mild discogenic disease, mild spondylosis and mild diffuse posterior disc bulges at L4-L5 and L5-S1.
Also at L4-L5 there is a central HNP which is slightly eccentric to the right. It impresses upon the thecal sac and the medial aspect of the right L5 nerve root as it exits the thecal sac.
finally at L5-S1 there is a 5 mm of restrolisthesis. A broad based disc osteophyte impresses upon the thecal sac and the ventral aspects of both S1 nerve roots exiting the thecal sac. The disc osteophyte complex extends into the recesses and proximal neural foramina bilaterally.
Can you explain what this means and does it take surgery to correct it

1. There is a disc in-between the vertebrae works as a shock-absorber function, the disc contains good amount of water content.
2. This water content is lost in in degenerative disc diseases and gets merited in different directions posteriorly.
3.There is nerve compression ( pressure effect on the nerve ) with herniated / slipped disc (case pressure effect).And the-cal sac compression at different levels of lumbar vertebrae.
4.There is anterior movement / listhesis of L5 over S1 and the osteophyte growth causing pressure effect on the spinal chord.
5.Rest all can be treated conservatively with exercise and physiotherapy , but listhsis might need operative procedure with trans pedicular screw fixation might be needed to align the spine. Good luck.
