My 88 year old mother (I have health care POA) has normal MCV, MCH right at bottom (26) of range - 26.1 , high ferritin (254), high RDW-CV (16.0 - 7% higher than top (15) of range), low hemoglobin at 8.4 and hematocrit at 27.7, TIBC at 229 (range 228-428), and UIBC at 207 (range 110-370). Hello
Thanks for your query
Based on the reports and query, my opinion is
1. All values are normal except hemoglobin, RDW, ferritin and transferin saturation.
2. Low hemoglobin is a pointer for anemia. High RDW indicates varied size of RBCs, mostly microcytic hypochromic anemia.
3. Serum iron, TIBC is normal which rules out anemia due to iron deficiency.
4. Decreased transferrin saturation and raised ferritin indicate anemia of other causes
5. Anemia is probably due to chronic diseases, she needs to be evaluated thoroughly before deciding on management to know the possible causes like chronic inflammatory conditions or any chronic illness.
Hope this helps.
Regards
