Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my ggt is 124 i am 33 years old female , do not drink, my ast is 36 and alt 51 no hepatitis ..did a liver function test all is normal. I suffer hypo thyroid. My doc is considering a liver biopsy should i do it or wait will they ever go back to normal ?
Usually ALT or AST values higher than "two times the upper normal limit", is considered abnormal ( in some countries, ALT or AST values of more than 100 are considered abnormal).
Value of AST or ALT greater than 85 or above maybe investigated further. GGT level is high . if you have symptoms ( like pruritus, jaundice) then further blood test maybe advised ( autoimmune antibodies).
merely slightly elevated GGT does not require liver biopsy, to the best of my knoledge. you may take a second opinion from a another hepatologist.
any further questions are welcomed. hope to answer your concern.
wish you good health.
regards, Dr Tayyab Malik
