What Does ECT Mean In Psychology?

Hi Sir,I am Jitesh from Chennai.I need to know about ECT in psychiatry.My wife is suffering from an issue. she see some character in the house & will talk with that character will also obey the character, some times she will be very good suddenly her mood changes.after consulting a psychiatrist he has given some medicines, but finally he says need to do ECT.but dont know for any side effects regarding ECT.We have a child of 1 year and 4 months

Hello dear,
Understand your concern.

ECT is a electro convulsion therapy or electro shock therapy.
In this therapy seizure is induced by electrically to relief from psychiatric illness.
Mechanism of Action: It has a anticonvulsion action and increased perfusion and metabolism in hippocampus
Indication:
Drug resistant major depressive (Bipolar/unipolar) disorder
Mania
Catatonia

It is effective in 50% cases in treatment resistance major depressive disorder.
Relapse is common after 8-12 months.
But to prevent relapse, try cyclic anti depressant drug should be given after ECT.

It is given 2-3 times per week until disappearance of symptoms of psychiatric disorder.
Therapy is given under anesthesia and muscle relaxant.

Side effect:
1. Confusion
2. Memory loss- most commonly occur
3. Brain damage in some rare cases
