General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
SGPT (serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase) is an enzyme that is present in liver cells. When there is damage or inflammation in the liver, the SGPT levels in the blood increase. Normal SGPT levels are below 40 U/L for men and below 35 U/L for women.
An SGPT value of 48 is slightly elevated but still within the normal range. Your occasional drinking and unhealthy diet may have caused some damage to your liver in the past, which resulted in a slightly elevated SGPT level. However, with the improvement in your lifestyle and no drinking for a few months, your SGPT levels have reduced.
To maintain healthy liver function, it is recommended to avoid alcohol consumption and limit the intake of fast food and packaged fruit juice. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, staying hydrated, and regular exercise can also help improve liver function. You may also want to follow up with your doctor and get your liver function tests done periodically to monitor any changes.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
