Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Does A Bruise Under The Tongue After Tooth Extraction Indicate?
I had a tooth extracted a week ago and have noticed a bruise (bluish coloration) on the front underside of my tongue, same side as extraction. Could this be bruising? Or do I need to be concerned about something more serious? I will contact my dentist but am somewhat concerned now, 8:30 PM.
As per your query, bruise under the tongue after tooth extraction is very common as sometimes it is due to piercing of blood vessel and hematoma, and could be due to leakage of blood to superficial skin.
I would suggest you to give ice pack to affected area for 10 to 12 mins thrice a day. Start proper course of Ibuprofen and anti-inflammatory medication. It will take 7 to 10 days to get it completely normal.
If the swelling doesn't start subsiding, then it may be an indication of infection, and then you should consult the dentist again for proper examination. The dentist may prescribe you further antibiotic course.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
