What Does A Bulge On The Thigh That Is Hot To The Touch Indicate?

My husband was playing baseball and ran for a ball in the outfield and felt a sharp pain in his right thigh. He fell to the ground from the pain and could barely walk afterwards. Now the thigh is red, with a hand size bulge and it is hot to the touch. What does that mean?

This sounds like either a torn tendon or a torn muscle with a hematoma (a pool of blood).

He needs to have this evaluated with an exam and an MRI of the thigh to determine how serious this is since if it's a torn tendon he may need surgical repair of that
