Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi I am a 23 year old male. I noticed a small bump about 2 inches above my tailbone. Almost on the lower part of my back but still sort of on my butt. It wasn t big at first and was skin colored. About a day later, it turned into a large quarter sized bump, warm to the feel and hard to the touch. Very painful when sitting or touching it. Very red in appearance, clearly infected. I think it is a pilonidal cyst but am clearly not a doctor. Today is day 4 and it has drawn to a big white head, much like an over-sized pimple. What i m really asking is; should I go to the doctor right away to have it lanced? Or could I let it burst on it s own and keep it clean? The pain has lessened since the white head showed up. Still very red though.
From your description it appears to be a boil with pointing. It needs to be drained, then only it will heal faster. If it is left as it is, it is likely to burst, because of the position you may find it difficult to clean at home. Plus if it large enough, a proper cleaning and dressing is needed. Also there may be a need for some antibiotic treatment to prevent recurrence, which your local doctor will be able to decide. Thanks.
