What Does A Bump On The Head Indicate?

Hi I m a male aged 18 and for the past year or so I have noticed a really unusual bump at the back of my head. It doesn t cause any discomfort but recently it s starting to bother me as I think it could be something serious as before I just dismissed it. Can you please tell me what this could be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, If I were your treating Doctor for this case of bump on head. I would ask for the how long it is been there.
I would come up with two possibilities, these include:

The first possibility is of lipoma, which is a benign tumor composed of adipose tissue (body fat). It is the most common benign form of soft tissue tumor. Lipomas are soft to the touch, usually movable, and are generally painless. Many lipomas are small (under one centimeter diameter) but can enlarge to sizes greater than 6 cm.
Usually, treatment of a lipoma is not necessary, unless the tumor becomes painful or restricts movement. They are usually removed for cosmetic reasons, if they grow very large.

The second possibility is of Fibromas (or fibroid tumors or fibroids) are benign tumors that are composed of fibrous or connective tissue.
Benign fibromas may, but need not be, removed. Removal is usually a brief outpatient procedure.

I suggest you to consult a physician to do physical examination and ultrasound if needed. But either case it is not serious. You could only go to primary care doctor if the bump is causing severe pain.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
