What Does A Cyst In Foot On X-ray Mean?

My 13 yr old son has injured his right ankle several times in the last 4 yrs. Always showing up as a sprain. He just injured it again playing football ball, he twisted his foot in a hole. He could not walk on it so we had an xray done. The xray showed a small cyst on the top of the foot, I think the navicular bone, a cloudy are behind the ankle are and at the growth plate in his heel the top part is jagged. We now have to get an MRI? Any ideas of what maybe going on or if we need the MRI?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
I have studied your case and I think there can be following possibilities in your case.
1. It can be a cartilage injury which is causing pain in his ankle.
2. It can be a ligament injury like strings which stabilizes ankle joint.
So I would recommend you to get MRI to confirm the diagnosis. I there is cartilage or meniscus injury than your son might need a key hole surgery which is a minor procedure and It can take care of his ankle pain. I would recommend you to get MRI as soon as possible and If you want my opinion than you can send MRI to me also.
