What Does A Gray Shadow When Focusing After Retina Surgery Indicate?

On a Friday, I had surgery for a detached retina and a small gas bubble was placed in my eye. I was told that I only had to keep my head down over the weekend, which I did. I slept on my left side until the bubble dissipated, about 2 weeks. I had central vision before the surgery, now, a month after the surgery I still do not have central vision. There is a gray shadow wherever I focus. Will my central vision come back in time or do I need another procedure to correct this?

Hello,

After the retinal detachment surgery there are several do’s and don’ts that most people have to follow for a period of a few weeks. If a gas bubble is left in the vitreous chamber, air travel is restricted for at least a month after surgery.

Typically, it takes minimum three months to ensure that the retina has been reattached firmly and for the functional visual recovery. The severity of the retinal detachment determines the speed at which a patient’s vision reappears. After the operation, vision can take three months or longer to improve.

The longer the retina stays in a detached condition the lower the probability of near complete visual recovery. That’s why most doctors will insist on doing the retinal detachment surgery as soon as the diagnosis is confirmed. So you need to wait at least for 3 months for a normal vision.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
