What Does A Hole In The Shin Bone Indicate?

I was kicked in the shin during a rugby match. In addition to the contusion, there is now a hole in the shin bone itself. I can run my thumb along the shin and insert it into the area to a depth of about 3/8 . The diameter of the missing bone is about that of a quarter. There is no pain other than when the area is depressed. What does this mean? Will it heal? Do I need to take additional measures?

Hi,

In all probability, you do not have any bony defect- what you feel is dent due to contusion and swelling in the bone.

If you have any doubt then get X rays of the leg. If you are able to walk properly then nothing else but local Ice is required.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Gopal Goel, Orthopaedic Surgeon
