What Does A Lump Near The Knee Cap Indicate?

I am older 53 , a repairman who is many times on my knees to repair appliances but I almost always wear knee pads except when I forget. Tonight I noticed a big ball just below my right knee cap which seems to be some type of fluid but I dont feel any pain even when I touch it. Is this water in knees or something worse?

Hello,

You are suffering from a lump near the knee cap that feels like fluid. You have no pain. The swollen kneecap can be caused by a small injury, overuse, arthritis or bursitis. These are the mild forms of knee swelling and cause little or no pain. However, you are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP/Orthopedics or in the ER & get required tests, imaging tests (X-ray, ultrasound, MRI) done to detect the pathology causing you the symptoms.

You will be treated at the earliest. Swollen kneecap occurs when the knee gets filled with fluid, also known as water on the knee or knee effusion. This can happen either slowly or just at once depending on the reason behind it like injury, dislocation , tear of tendon or ligament. The swelling is caused by the accumulation of fluids in the knee. If the knee feels tender to touch, there is a possibility that there is some liquid filled inside it.

Bursa is a fluid filled sac in the knee joint that helps smooth movements. If that gets inflamed and swollen, extra fluid is filled in it causing accumulation of fluid in the kneecap. Get clinically assessed, you may need to get aspiration done. The fluid may sometimes come back and the procedure might have to be repeated a couple of times. If required cortisone shots will be given on the knee by your treating doctor.

Knee swelling healing may take about a week or more to heal. If there has been a tear in the muscle and the knee has been operated then it may take a month to heal. Give rest to your affected knee / leg. Applying cold compression will give relief. You should keep your leg on a stool when sitting and on a pillow when on bed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

Swelling below knee cap could be due to bursa or soft tissue swelling. A bursa is a cystic lesion with fluid collection. It occurs due to friction most commonly. I suggest you to consult an orthopedist for clinical assessment, relevant investigations and thus management.
