What Does A Lump Under The Chin Indicate?

My son (10 years old) has found a pea sized lump under his chin - approximately 3-5 cm posterior to the tip of the mandible. He has a few, slightly swollen lymph nodes in his neck as well. He seems to be feeing fine. No fever, or other signs of infection. Any ideas?

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

If he already has a history of few swollen lymph nodes, then there is a strong possibility that the lump under the chin can be due to swollen submental lymph node only..
It can also be due to swelling in the submental salivary gland..
So first of all get an ultrasound done to rule out what exactly it is..
At his age it can be due to infection only..
I would suggest you to consult an Emergency room and get him examined..
You can be advised a course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory painkillers for reducing swelling..
Do cool compresses over the swelling..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
