What Does A Pink Patch That Covers The Areola On Breast Indicate?

I have been breastfeeding for almost 6 months. Recently I have developed a pink patch that covers a large portion of the areola on each boob. They don't really hurt. They are slightly itchy, dry and puffy. I see no symptoms of thrush on the baby. What could this be?

Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I would keep a possibility of Nipple Eczema, constant sucking during feeding being the underlying cause. Females who have Dry skin/Atopic are more prone to develop eczematous conditions such as this.

Avoid repeated washing/wiping/cleaning with water of the affected area because it would cause more dryness and can lead to painful cracks.

I would suggest that you use an aloe-allantoin based cream/gel for keeping the area soft and moist, preventing it from cracking.

A moderately potent topical steroid e.g fluticasone propionate cream once daily, after the bay has taken feed can be applied to hasten the resolution.

regards
