What Does A Sharp Excruciating Pain In The Chest Indicate?

I periodically stabbing/sharp pains in the left side of my chest area (literally on the left side, not by my heart). When I breathe in deeper it becomes more pronounced. This has been happening more frequently in the last several months. At first I thought it was possibly stress- related, but I am not stressed right now and it is more significant this evening. My recent cardiac tests in the last year or so have indicated a healthy heart, so I suspect this is something like an injured rib??? Thank you in advance, dan roach
