What Does A Small Lump On The Right Side Of The Neck Indicate?

I have a small lump on the right side of my neck, closer to my jawline than the bottom of my neck. The lump is soft and almost feels like an enlarged vein. The pulse is visible and has been like this since I have noticed it about a week ago. It s possible it has been there longer and I may not have noticed it. Went for a physical today and doctor didn t seem too concerned, but wanted to see the results of blood work-up and based on that, possibly get an ultrasound to check it out. Now I have been recuperating from a rotator cuff injury on my right shoulder, and still wake up with some pain the morning, going on about 4 months now. Just seems to take a long time to heal. Could this be putting compensation strain on the neck causing the pulsating? Curious to hear thoughts on here

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Swollen lymph nodes in neck area are commonly seen and in most cases if there are no other symptoms, it doesn’t indicate any disease. However if there are additional symptoms such as fever, rapid growth of node, cough, weight loss or excessive swelling then this may be something pathological and require treatment. In these cases it is most commonly cause by some sort of infection. The most common cause of swollen lymph nodes is an infection, particularly a viral infection, such as the common cold. Other possible causes of swollen lymph nodes include: Strep throat, Measles, Ear infections, Infected (abscessed) tooth, Mononucleosis. Mononucelosis is commonest along the young people and this should be ruled out first. Then it can be treated with antibiotics or other medications depending on established cause. He should drink more fluids, take ibuprofen and rest as much as possible till symptoms persist. In doubtful cases, lymph node biopsy can be taken but I don’t think this is necessary at this point.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
